Radon Mitigation Overview

There are no safe levels of radon in homes or commercial properties. High levels of radon exposure have been shown to have significant impacts on health and are the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

Radon is a common concern for many homes and businesses across the Southwest. Though it varies from county to county, both Texas and New Mexico have shown a high risk for radon exposure in major cities. From El Paso to Austin and Albuquerque to Taos, radon is a prevalent issue.

Thankfully, there are many ways to help minimize and mitigate the levels of radon in homes and commercial properties!

Radon Mitigation Systems

Radon Mitigation System refers to any system or process designed to reduce the presence of radon gas in the indoor air of a residential or commercial property. This is achieved by expelling the radon gas from beneath the foundation of a property before it can get inside the home or business.

There are a variety of different techniques and systems you can use to mitigate radon levels. Depending on your property’s foundation type, some systems are going to be more optimal than others. As NRPP Certified Radon Mitigation Professionals, we install the following Radon Mitigation Systems:

Sub-Slab Depressurization

This is the most common Radon Mitigation System found in homes and businesses across the Southwest. This system uses a combination of fans and piping to steadily draw radon-laden air from below a concrete slab foundation or basement into a collection point, forcing the air to an external vent located above the roof of the property.

Sub-Membrane Depressurization

This system is designed for properties with gravel or soil crawl spaces. Using a special plastic membrane, the exposed foundation is sealed off, with a collection pipe sealed under the membrane. Like with Sub-Slab Depressurization, the collection pipe is then connected to a fan and vent system which exhausts air out a vent above the roofline.

Soil Gas Collector Mat

Also known as a vapor mat, these passive Radon Mitigation Systems are primarily used in new construction. This extremely strong pressure-resistant plastic membrane is placed directly on the soil prior to the foundation being poured. When installed properly, this allows for radon to move freely under the concrete foundation and be passively vented outside without the need of a fan.
